Cistercian Monastery Stiepel

For more than two decades one place in the Ruhr region has been growing as a spiritual destination: the Cistercian monastery of Stiepel – a spiritual oasis for people on a quest, a living chaplaincy, a place of pilgrimage whose roots reach back to the Middle Ages.

Its centre is the pilgrimage church of St. Marien built in 1914/15, which houses the “Suffering Mothers of Stiepel” picture with miraculous powers, dating from the 15th century. The monks, who live according to the rules of Saint Benedict, also carry out spiritual welfare work for the monastery chaplaincy and pilgrimage site, and offer spiritual retreats at the monastery. The latter has been enriched since 1996 by the lecture series “Auditorium Kloster Stiepel”.

The concert series “Praise to the Virgin Mary in Song and Music” has since 1959 been part of the rich variety of events at Stiepel. A unique feature of Bochum is the Stiepel Monastery Shop, and the “Klosterhof” restaurant, which provides refreshments. Most of all, the Cistercian motto: “Porta patet – magis cor” applies everywhere: “The door is open and the heart even more !”
