“Glück auf!” – And down we go to the demonstration mine: The world’s largest mining museum offers a rare insight into the internal workings of a mine.

Descend into the mine and experience a fascinating underground world. In the gripping atmosphere of the 2.5 kilometre network of roadways you will discover some interesting facts about iron ore and coal mining. Alongside a large number of machines and equipment, you’ll see a model of Tobias, the last pit pony, who worked his final shift in 1966.

On the surface, too, the German Mining Museum has lots to offer, with exhibits illustrating different aspects of mining spread over three floors. Apart from massive winding engines you can see precious stones and working models demonstrating, for instance, the role of women in the industry. The high calibre of the exhibition is a reflection of the fact that the museum is also home to a renowned Research Institute for the Mining history.

A simulator takes you to a previously undisclosed part of the mine past the “blind shaft” from the 1960s that is equipped with an illuminated underwater-show and conveys a very special atmosphere. A “hauling engineer” sets the mood for the ride in the pit-cage that simulates an authentic experience with the help of a hydraulic platform, a projection, special sound effects and ventilation. Once you have reached the bottom, you are lead through a weather-lock in which you experience the high temperatures that prevail in the depths of 1.200 metres.

Round off an extraordinary experience by going up the winding tower which once stood at Germania colliery. From the lookout platform some 62 metres up you can enjoy the views over the city of Bochum.
