Kunstmuseum Bochum

Across from the city’s public park with its many steel artworks, you’ll find Bochum Art Museum.

It was opened in 1960 as a municipal art gallery in the splendid Marckhoff-Rosenstein villa which is one of the city’s architectural treasures. In 1983 an extension was designed by the Danish architects Bo and Wohlert whose names stand for excellence in museum architecture.

A focused concept has given the Museum its own profile among the many art museums and galleries in the Ruhr area. Particular emphasis was placed on Eastern Europe art, and many works were acquired which today form the central focus of the collection. But the visitor will also see a number of contemporary classics, from Bacon and Matta to Beuys as well as works by experimental performance artists. It is this diversity which makes the collection so fascinating.

Parts of the own art collection are regularly supplemented by temporary exhibitions. From the works of René Laubies and South African photography to contemporary art from Latin America - Bochum Art Museum is always worth a visit.
