which were founded in 1975, with the two departments “Antiquity” and “Modern Age”. Endowments by Julius and Margot Funcke, Paul Dierichs and Peter Ludwig form the basis of the collection of antiquities. Of outstanding importance are the Greco-Roman portraits in marble and bronze and the Greek painted vases from the 9th to the 4th centuries BC.
The “Modern Age” collection owes much to generous private endowments as well as to the tireless research of the University curators. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, and videos by such artists as Josef Albers and Alberto Giacometti, Cy Twombly and Robert Mangold, Richard Serra and Bruce Nauman, James Turrell and Donald Judd, Gotthard Graubner and Gerhard Richter as well as Hilla Becher and her pupils.
